Canal Projects is a nonprofit contemporary art institution based in Soho that is dedicated  to supporting forward-thinking international and local artists at pivotal moments in their career. Through production, exhibition, research and interpretation of this work we intend to foster artistic practices that challenge and reflect on the current moment.

We are looking for an Assistant Curator as a key member of our small team reporting directly to the Artistic Director and Senior Curator. The role is full-time permanent beginning August 1, 2024. The Assistant Curator will assist the Artistic Director in research, preparation and production of major exhibitions, performances, and programs as well as department operations to ensure daily functions are smoothly executed. This role will receive support from a full-time gallery assistant. This position is for a creative thinker and gifted communicator deeply invested in a nonprofit ethos of working as a team  to put forward exciting and experimental programs to a diverse audience.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the logistical and conceptual preparation for exhibitions and public programs from scholarly research to technical production, and installation
  • Function as a liaison with artists, artist studios and organizational partners
  • Ability to work independently under the guidance of the Senior Curator and take an active role in supporting the day-to-day operations of the department
  • Assist with preparation of press materials including writing and editing
  • Oversee social media strategy and implementation
  • Coordinate photographic documentation of programs and maintain digital archives
  • Answer inquiries and conduct gallery tours as necessary for visitors
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends for scheduled gallery events
  • Work closely with our PR Firm to facilitate press requests and assets
  • Perform other duties as assigned by leadership, demonstrating flexibility and readiness to contribute to various tasks and projects as needed

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Art, Art History, or comparable academic discipline and a minimum of 2-3 years of related experience in an arts organization
  • International contemporary art knowledge desired
  • Excellent research, writing, and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge and interest in emerging and underrepresented artists in national and international contexts
  • Flexible schedule to work evenings and weekends for scheduled exhibition openings and events
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer proficiency on Mac and PC including MS Office, Photoshop, and preferably SketchUp

The position is full-time with a salary range of $65,000 and a generous benefits package. Starting August 1st, this position requires a Monday through Friday schedule that will transition to Tuesday through Saturday hours beginning in late September on-site at the gallery.
