The List Visual Arts Center at MIT is hiring an Assistant Curator to join their team and support the curatorial department. The Assistant Curator will work under the supervision of the Curator and will be involved in all aspects of public art, collections research, and exhibition organization. Responsibilities will include curating temporary exhibitions, supporting major exhibitions, and collaborating with artists, galleries, and other institutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Research, Propose, and Curate Exhibitions: Lead the planning and execution of List Projects exhibitions(typically 3 per year) and assist with major exhibitions in the main galleries.
- Collaborate on Major Exhibitions: Work with the Curator on long-term planning and traveling exhibitions.
- Negotiate Loans: Coordinate loan agreements with galleries, collectors, artists, and institutions.
- Exhibition Planning and Installation: Work closely with the Gallery Manager, Registrar, and Install Crew to ensure smooth exhibition planning and installation.
- Grant Funding: Manage content for grant funding of exhibitions and commissions, working with the Assistant Director.
- Budget Management: Oversee exhibition-related budgets.
- Public Programs: Collaborate with the Campus and Public Programs Senior Manager to develop and execute public programs.
- Tours and Engagement: Provide donor-related and public tours for special exhibitions.
- Research: Conduct scholarly research, write exhibition texts, and prepare materials for interpretation.
- Exhibition Documentation: Generate checklists, object labels, and other materials for exhibitions.
- Exhibition Catalogues: Manage the production of exhibition catalogues, including coordination with editors, designers, and contributors.
- Administrative Support: Provide general administrative support as needed.
Qualifications:
- Education: MA in Art History, Curatorial Studies, or related field preferred. A BA/BS is required.
- Experience: Minimum 3 years of curatorial work or relevant experience.
- Skills: Strong written and verbal communication, experience in contemporary art, and the ability to manage multiple projects efficiently.
- Additional: Familiarity with exhibition planning, working with artists, and project management tools like Asana.
