An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Curator to join the visual arts team at the Barbican, a world renowned multi-disciplinary arts centre. This role will support the Curators and Head of Visual Arts, working on Art Gallery exhibitions, Curve commissions and related events.
The visual arts are crucially important to the Barbican’s success. The Art Gallery is dedicated to the presentation of exhibitions covering modern and contemporary art, design/architecture and photography, whereas The Curve is devoted to the commissioning of large scale site specific installations by contemporary artists. The Barbican aims to serve both artists and audiences and excels in the presentation of exhibitions that are thoughtful, curatorially ambitious and often focus on timely reassessments and inter-disciplinary practice.
You will be responsible for supporting the co-ordination of exhibitions/cross arts events and liaising with lenders, artists, designers and others as required by the Curator/Associate Curator and as directed by the Head of Visual Arts. You will have significant experience of working in a gallery or museum, organising exhibitions, as well as writing and publishing in an art context.
The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships both internally and externally at all levels. The ability to work to tight deadlines and maintain a calm, ordered approach, with excellent attention to detail is essential.
