The role of Assistant Curator is to oversee and manage the delivery of selected projects within The White House’s artistic and community programme, including a series of artist residencies and commissions, public realm projects, workshops and events across a range of disciplines.
The Assistant Curator will report to and work closely with The White House (TWH) Curator and broader team, aswell as its wider community and stakeholders to develop and deliver these projects.
We are looking for someone who is passionate about social art practice, who enjoys working collaboratively with artists and community members to deliver high quality, challenging and socially engaged projects that are embedded within their context.
It is envisaged the key projects the Assistant Curator will be involved in will include a programme celebrating the Becontree Estate Centenary; a project connected to Social Care provision in partnership with London Borough of Barking and Dagenham; and Community Gardening/Greening initiatives.
The White House, established by Create London in 2016 on Dagenham’s Becontree estate, is now an artistic and community hub embedded in the area. Its programme acts as a tool to address social, political and culturally relevant issues to its site and the community. Its activities include inviting artists to live and work in the house; exploring new ways to collaborate with neighbours in the local community; and a public programme, led by residents, which ranges from poetry to painting to gardening. Central to the work at The White House is the adoption of approaches that challenge traditional hierarchies to democratize decision-making across both programming and running the house.
The White House and Create London are committed to creating opportunities that are accessible and welcoming to all. Candidates with Black, Asian or minority ethnic heritage, those who are facing barriers due to difficult socio-economic and/or are disabled are particularly encouraged to apply for this role.
The recent Panic! research commissioned by Create London demonstrates a lack of representation within the arts sector of young professionals with these backgrounds. We welcome applications from everyone who meets the requirements of the Person Specification.

INTERVIEWS: Thursday 16th & Friday 17th January 2020 at The White House in Dagenham. The White House is an accessible building, please contact us with any specific access needs you may have.
