
Assistant Curator
Overview:
Working with other Curators in the Department, the Assistant Curator conceptualizes and organizes exhibitions, including exhibition budgets, research, and documentation; investigating and proposing acquisitions; and fostering the interests of donors and collectors.
The Assistant Curator works closely with representatives of other departments within the museum, including but not limited to Education, Exhibitions, Management, Communications, and others outside the museum to prepare exhibition, education programs, grants and fundraising solicitations, public relations campaign, exhibition graphics, etc.
Essential Functions:
- Conceptualize, organize and direct tasks related to exhibition projects and accompanying publications at a level commensurate with the highest professional standards and supervise the presentation of exhibitions organized elsewhere of a national and/or international scope.
- Participate in curatorial department meetings regarding permanent collection, acquisitions, exhibition planning, museum strategic planning, fundraising, and other exhibition-related matters as needed.
- Prepare exhibition descriptions for staff, board, prospective funders, and other groups.
- Solicit works of art for the museum’s permanent collection.
- Act as curator in charge of non-MOCA organized exhibitions, handling all aspects related to this function.
- Cultivate relationships with donors, collectors, gallery dealers, artists, museum professionals, and scholars.
- Conduct visits to artists’ studios, museums, galleries, and alternative spaces as necessary.
- Works with the Donor Programs Manager to organize trips for support groups to cities in the U.S. and abroad.
- Continue professional development (research, publications, lectures, juries, management, and academic training) and contribute to high-quality original research.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Two years of related experience; or acceptable equivalent.
- BA (MA preferred) in visual art, art history, museum studies, or a related cultural field.
- Extensive knowledge of contemporary art as well as current developments in museum culture and discourse.
- Knowledge of collection management, exhibition development and current museum practices.
- Excellent skills in conducting primary research, writing, effective verbal communication and team-building.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and proven ability to work well with a range of colleagues and collaborators.
- Passionate interest in the role of art in civic and community life.
