JOB TITLE: Assistant Curator
REPORTS TO: Curator
FSLA STATUS: Full-Time, Exempt
Salary: $42,000-$52,000 commensurate with experience

The Assistant Curator shares responsibility for forwarding the institution’s curatorial mission through the research, development, and implementation of engaging and innovative special exhibitions, art and history-based projects and initiatives, and the presentation of the Museum’s permanent collections. Reporting to the Curator, the Assistant Curator works closely with the Executive Director, Curatorial, and Education Department staff, as well as community partners to ensure the presentation of art and history reflects, and is relevant to, the community and inspires thoughtful engagement with the Museum.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develops new and engaging ways to showcase art and history through exhibitions, installation, community collaborations and initiatives that broaden the public’s understanding of art and regional history.
• Coordinates all aspects of annual MIXMASTER Member’s Juried exhibit and its following Winner’s solo show.
• Collaborates with internal and external colleagues to develop and implement curatorial projects that reflect The MATT’s mission of inclusivity and diversity.
• Researches and presents thoughtful and scholarly opportunities that inspire visitors and the public to learn about and enjoy art and history.
• Manages exhibition design, installation, and presentation and documents exhibitions with installation photos.
• Develops and assists in preparation and management of brochure production and all project- related content for the website and communication materials.
• With Curator and Director, develops new strategies for working with artists and historians to interpret art in the galleries and non-gallery spaces including outdoors and in the community.
• Prepares notices of meetings for the Collections Committee, prepare materials for the meeting, and transcribe meeting notes.
• Assists with grant writing to further collection research, conservation, and management.
• Supports maintenance of curatorial department and library files on collection artists and objects
with an emphasis on Native American art and history.
• Identifies and researches significant trends, issues, and opportunities in regional history, and
Native American studies.
• Supports exhibition and project fundraising proposals and grant applications.
• Is able to manage budgets and meet deadlines.

• 2 years of curatorial experience in museum or gallery setting
• Master’s degree preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS

• May work non-standard hours including weekends and holidays with prior notice.
• During installation/de-installation, expected to climb ladders, hang artwork, and lift objects
weighing up to 40 pounds.
• Occasional local travel may be required.
