Title: The Cecil and Ida Green Assistant Curator/Associate Curator/Curator of Asian and Southeast Asian Art
Reports to: Interim Chief Curator

Salary: minimum starting pay for Assistant Curator is $60,000; pay is commensurate with experience (see qualifications below)
Scope of Position
The Curator of Asian and Southeast Asian Art oversees the care, display, conservation and appearance of the Asian and Southeast Asian art collections. Working in partnership with the Curatorial, Education, Exhibitions and Publications, Collections Management, Marketing and Communications, and Development divisions, the Asian and Southeast Asian Art Curator will guide the mission and artistic program of the Museum and will serve as an advocate of the Museum locally, nationally, and internationally with a high degree of integrity and professionalism. The position oversees research and exhibitions; works with donors and supporters; travels to identify possible acquisitions; makes recommendations regarding acquisitions; and administers funds designated for acquisitions.
Essential Functions
- Oversees, manages, and cares for artworks in the Asian and Southeast Asian collection, including gallery installation, display, deinstallation, conservation needs, and proper storage.
- Oversees acquisitions of new artwork that represent the highest standards of connoisseurship.
- Ensures new artwork is acquired in accordance with the policies and procedures of the DMA, national, and international laws.
- Conducts scholarly research on the Asian and Southeast Asian collection, with a primary focus on provenance, cataloguing, and attributions, with the goal of updating the Museum’s digital and analog records.
- Develops major exhibition projects that tour nationally and internationally in alignment with the goals and timeline of the Museum’s strategic plan.
- Conducts research, exhibition preparation and coordination, and solicits loans.
- Performs scholarly research and writing for catalogues of the permanent collection, exhibitions, and related materials, including major catalogues of international significance.
- Continues professional development, including research and publication, lectures, and participation in museum/arts organizations.
- Plays an active role within the Curatorial Department by participating in interdepartmental teams to further the goals and programs of the Museum.
- Works with the Exhibitions and Interpretation
- Department and Education Department to develop and present resources and programs for the public relating to the interpretation of the collections and special exhibitions, including gallery designs, gallery texts, publications, lectures, electronic media, and docent training.
- Actively works with the Marketing and Communications
- Department to promote the Museum through press materials and appearances, as well as through a variety of media: broadcast, digital, and print.
- Assists with writing and securing grant proposals on behalf of the Museum.
- Adheres to Museum’s policies, procedures, and core values.
- Conforms to the AAMD code of ethics governing the art museum profession.
Requirements
Education, Experience, and Certification
Minimum Qualifications: Assistant Curator
- Advanced degree in Art History from an accredited university with a specialty in Asian and Southeast Asian art
- Minimum 3 years of curatorial, collections management, or exhibition experience in a museum organization
- Advanced reading skills in at least one language pertaining to the DMA’s significant holdings of Asian and Southeast Asian art
- Minimum Qualifications: Associate Curator
- Advanced degree in Art History from an accredited university, PhD preferred with a specialty in Asian and Southeast Asian art
- Minimum 4-5 years curatorial experience in a museum organization
- Advanced reading skills in at least one language pertaining to the DMA’s significant holdings of Asian and Southeast Asian art
Minimum Qualifications: Full Curator
- Advanced degree in Art History from an accredited university, PhD preferred with a specialty in Asian and Southeast Asian art
- 5-10+ years curatorial experience in a museum organization
- Advanced reading skills in at least one language pertaining to the DMA’s significant holdings of Asian and Southeast Asian art
- Demonstrated record of significant scholarly contributions to the field and organization of influential exhibitions of Asian and Southeast Asian art
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Proven track record of organizing international traveling exhibitions.
- Record of significant acquisitions through gifts and purchases.
- Ability to communicate, through lectures and publications, knowledge and experiences to a wide variety of audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to write for scholarly publications.
- Existing network of international artists, dealers, and curators.
- Extensive knowledge and contacts in national and international museums and art markets.
- Superior written and verbal skills.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, TMS, and the use of an internal content management system.
- Ability to work collaboratively on projects with other internal and external teams.
