Tate Britain is seeking an Assistant Curator to join its Historic British Art team, with a focus on British art from 1850 to 1915.

The successful candidate will support the research, planning, administration and delivery of temporary exhibitions and collection displays, including projects devoted to British Impressionism and James Tissot. They will also contribute to the development of the permanent collection, acquisitions, publications and public programmes.

The position would suit someone with strong research and organisational skills, knowledge of British art from this period and an interest in contributing to more diverse understandings of British art history.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to the development and maintenance of Tate’s permanent collection and displays relating to British art from 1850 to 1915.
• Support the planning and delivery of temporary exhibitions and displays, including British Impressionism and James Tissot.
• Assist with touring exhibitions, including projects presented at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art in Washington.
• Manage loan correspondence, project records, database entries and filing.
• Liaise with lenders, registrars, conservators, installation teams and contractors.
• Process invoices, monitor budgets and contribute to budget planning.
• Research and contribute to gallery texts, catalogues and other publications.
• Support cross-team communication and project management.
• Work with departments including Conservation, Visitor Experience, Security, Press, Publishing and Events.
• Contribute to talks, tours and events, including occasional out-of-hours activities.
• Keep up to date with relevant research and undertake professional training.

Requirements

• Demonstrable knowledge of one or more aspects of British art from 1850 to 1915.
• Strong research skills and an interest in new directions in art-historical research.
• Curatorial experience, ideally involving a museum or other collection.
• Experience working on loan exhibitions and changing displays.
• Experience of collaborative and team-based working.
• A commitment to equality, diversity and respect in the workplace.
• Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
• Excellent writing and presentation skills.
• Competence with standard Microsoft software. Familiarity with basic CAD or collections databases would be useful, although training in Tate’s systems will be provided.
• An interest in and commitment to Tate’s work.
