The National Portrait Gallery houses a unique collection of all forms of portraiture of the people who have made or are currently contributing to British history and culture; the collection is the most comprehensive of its kind in the world. With around 2 million visitors each year and a strong national and international presence through touring exhibitions and special projects, the Gallery is one of the country’s most important and popular galleries.
Assistant Curator, Cross-Collections (Maternity Cover)
Part time, 24 hours (3 days) per week
£15,852 per annum i.e. pro-rated to the full time equivalent of £26,420 per annum
Fixed term until 3 May 2021
The National Portrait Gallery is recruiting an Assistant Curator, Cross-Collections (Maternity Cover). Reporting to the Curator, Missing Narratives on Women and in consultation with both the Tudor to Regency and Victorian to Contemporary teams, the post holder will support the redisplay of the permanent Collection by highlighting images of women and their stories, as well as those of women artists.
This is a great opportunity for the post holder to focus on representation of women in portraiture, and to conduct archival research and cataloguing at the Gallery. The research will lead to the identification of gaps in the Collection as well as the discovery of hidden portraits and stories to be revealed as part of Inspiring People in the re-display and in publications as well as within electronic resources that will be accessible to all.
We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate their interest in British art, history and portraiture through their work, with a particular interest in women. They will need to have a degree in Art History and ideally a postgraduate degree in Art History or Museum Studies, or demonstrable equivalent experience. The successful candidate will have previously worked in a Museum or Gallery setting.
To succeed in this role, you will need be an excellent organiser, with the ability to manage a number of tasks simultaneously. You will need to have a confident, professional and measured approach to work and have the ability to work flexibly and meticulously under pressure. It is vital that the post holder has strong communication skills, both written and verbally with experience of drafting minutes and correspondence. They will need to be able to convey key information clearly, accurately and succinctly.
