
Assistant Curator, Department of Photography
Description
The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Curator in the Department of Photography. The Assistant Curator works with senior curators to curate exhibitions and collection displays, develops and writes content for publications in print and online, conducts research on works in the Museum Collection and proposals for acquisition. As a member of the curatorial team, the Assistant Curator works with colleagues across the Museum and from peer institutions to ensure that exhibitions, learning and engagement programs, and other daily functions are executed efficiently and professionally.
Responsibilities:
- Assists senior curators with all aspects of research, planning, organization, and realization of collection displays and exhibitions.
- Performs collection display support functions, including bibliographic and checklist research, loan correspondence, publication research and production, and public program planning.
- Writes, edits, and assists in the production of Museum publications and display related materials, including wall texts and extended object labels.
- Assists in the maintenance of the Collection and loans, and expedites arrangements for custodial, registration, conservation, and preparation work as required in the gallery, study, and storage areas.
- Researches and presents works for acquisition to the Committee on Photography and assists in the communication with artists, galleries, donors, and more.
- Cultivates relationships with trustees, committee members, and donors.
- Conducts talks, walkthroughs, and participates in public programs.
- Functions as a liaison with other departments within the Museum.
- Keeps informed of current activity in the area of departmental interest through gallery and museum visits, publications, etc. and makes recommendations to senior staff.
- Participates in cross-departmental research groups (Working Groups, C-MAP).
- Performs any other duties related to the functions described above.
Requirements:
- Master of art in art history or curatorial studies degree completed, or PhD candidate in art history.
- Prior museum curatorial experience and expertise within an area of departmental interest.
- Proven track record of conceptualizing, organizing, and executing collection displays and exhibitions in museum galleries and similar spaces.
- Knowledge of early 20th photography and modern and contemporary art.
- Knowledge of MoMA’s Department of Photography Collection preferred.
- Sophisticated interpersonal skills to successfully work with a variety of museum departments.
- Demonstrated initiative and discernment.
- Ability to coordinate research and logistics for collection displays and temporary exhibitions as well as accompanying written materials.
- Superior research and writing skills are essential.
Supervise: Curatorial assistants, interns and support staff as assigned
Reports to: Senior curatorial titles
Salary: The salary for this position is 89,933 per annum
