The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is seeking a full-time Assistant Curator specializing in 14th–18th century Southern European (Italian and Spanish) painting and sculpture. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work closely with LACMA’s curatorial team and contribute to the museum’s mission of inclusive access, collaboration, and dynamic public engagement. The role is ideal for a professional with a strong background in European art history and a passion for expanding narratives around European art in an encyclopedic museum context.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborative Support: Work with the Curator and Department Head of European Painting and Sculpture and American Art to support permanent collection installations in LACMA’s new Geffen Galleries. Contribute content to Collections Online and assist with collection rotation planning.
- Exhibition Development: Manage all aspects of small-scale permanent collection rotations, including research, topic determination, object selection, layout planning, didactics, and overseeing installation. Assist with larger exhibition projects under the guidance of senior curatorial staff.
- Research and Scholarship: Perform advanced scholarly research, contributing to the field through exhibitions and publications. Engage with LACMA’s diverse audience through public programming, scholarly lectures, and educational outreach.
- Collection Growth: Build relationships with collectors, galleries, and the art market to identify opportunities for acquisitions and gifts to expand LACMA’s collection.
- Administrative Duties: Assist with departmental administrative tasks, including managing object inquiries, conducting collection research, and maintaining object files.
Qualifications:
- Education: MA, ABD, or PhD in Art History or a related field is preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of three years of curatorial experience with a focus on 14th–18th century Southern European (Italian and Spanish) painting and sculpture.
- Skills: Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage both academic and general audiences. Proven success in collaborative work and intellectual curiosity across different cultures and time periods in an encyclopedic museum context.
- Additional: A broad intellectual curiosity with a proven ability to connect time periods, cultures, and narratives in an encyclopedic museum context. Strong interest in inclusive and experimental approaches to curating.
Benefits:
- Salary: $67,000 to $72,000 annually, depending on experience.
