Assistant Curator, firstsite, Colchester
About firstsite
This is an opportunity to support the development of an acclaimed visual arts programme in the east of England. Based in Colchester, firstsite has built a reputation over the last 15 years for presenting new work to new audiences through its integrated learning and artistic programmes. In 2011 work was completed on its new purpose-built galleries and spaces, a building project initiated and realised through a working partnership with Arts Council England; Colchester Borough Council; Essex County Council; East of England Development Agency and the University of Essex.
Since opening our doors in September 2011 the programme has received wide critical acclaim, drawing both local and national audiences of over 300,000 people. Comprising four gallery exhibitions a year, in addition to separate projects hosted throughout the building and offsite, the programme seeks to commission new work from artists of international renown and support the development of original research. This activity is supplemented by a related programme of publishing, talks, screenings and events.
Role
Working closely with the Senior Curator and Technical Manager, this is one of two Assistant Curator roles that support the successful implementation of firstsite’s programme of exhibitions, publications events and other artistic projects. The post holder will be a core member of the Programmes team, working on designated projects to share responsibility for the programme overall. Liaising with artists, lenders, writers, designers and other partners as well as the other departments of the organisation the Assistant Curators play a key role in planning exhibitions, ensuring good communication at all levels. In addition to assisting on designated aspects of the Senior Curator’s work on exhibitions; from research and development to delivery and evaluation, the post holder will have an opportunity to lead on projects and contribute ideas towards the development of firstsite’s programme of solo and group exhibitions that are focused on, but not limited to, contemporary art.
Salary: £22,000-£25,000 per annum
