The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is seeking an Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art in the Department of Painting and Sculpture. MoMA holds the world’s largest and most inclusive collection of modern painting and sculpture, dating from the late 19th century to the present. The Assistant Curator will support exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, and the mentoring of junior staff.
Position Overview
Under the direction of the Chief Curator, the Assistant Curator will assist in organizing exhibitions and programs, conducting research, writing for catalogues and labels, coordinating loans, and engaging with artists, audiences, and donors. Opportunities may arise to independently curate smaller-scale exhibitions or projects.
Main Responsibilities
- Support all aspects of exhibition development and administration
- Conduct research for catalogues, brochures, labels, and didactic materials
- Maintain and support the collection, including acquisitions and loans
- Liaise with internal departments and external artists, scholars, and donors
- Engage with audiences and represent the Museum publicly
- Manage and mentor junior staff
Candidate Profile
- Master’s degree or higher in 20th and 21st century art history
- Four or more years of relevant curatorial experience
- Knowledge of modern and contemporary painting and sculpture
- Excellent research, writing, and communication skills
- Strong organizational, project management, and digital proficiency
- Ability to travel and work with diverse internal and external stakeholders
- Fluency in English; additional languages preferred
