About the Role

The Contemporary Art Gallery is one of Canada’s leading contemporary art spaces, driven by the vital work of art and artists in moving us toward a freer, more engaged world. Applications are currently invited for the position of TD Assistant Curator of Programming, a two-year full-time contract position at the gallery.
This position is made possible with the support of TD Bank Group through its corporate citizenship platform the TD Ready Commitment. This opportunity is open to candidates who have experienced systemic barriers to pursuing a career in the arts or who identify as belonging to a traditionally underrepresented community.
Working closely with CAG’s Curatorial team, the TD Assistant Curator of Programming will play a key role in planning and coordinating the gallery’s public programming and interpretive initiatives, while offering in-depth research contributions and administrative support to all artistic programs.
The ideal candidate will approach CAG’s programming with creativity and care; value collaborative work with a small team; and be enthusiastic about participating in the implementation of an artist-driven, audience-centred program.
Key Responsibilities
- Playing a central role in CAG’s curatorial team, working to plan, budget and execute in-house and offsite programs;
- Contributing to the development of the gallery’s public programming and interpretive initiatives in dialogue with curatorial colleagues, and managing their implementation and delivery;
- Assisting with the development of gallery publications in collaboration with artists, contributors and institutional partners;
- Providing research assistance for the gallery’s program development activities;
- Developing and maintaining positive relationships with artists, collaborators and other stakeholders.
During their two-year term, the TD Assistant Curator of Programming will also develop and implement a standalone programming initiative under the supervision and mentorship of one of the gallery’s curators.
The Person
The ideal candidate for this position will possess:
- a demonstrated interest in contemporary art;
- a strong desire to broaden their curatorial skill base and expand their professional networks;
- good project management and problem-solving skills, a detail-oriented focus and the ability to manage multiple priorities;
- the capacity to work adaptably with a broad array of colleagues, partners and stakeholders;
- strong oral and written communication skills, including an ability to communicate with a range of audiences;
- a commitment to contributing to an inclusive, anti-oppressive work environment.
Benefits
The compensation package for this position includes extended health, dental and vision benefits (after three months); an annual professional development stipend; and paid professional development flex time.
