An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Curator to join the visual arts team at the Barbican, a world renowned multi-disciplinary arts centre. This role will support the Curators and Head of Visual Arts, working on exhibitions, talks and other events, specifically relating to the area of photography.

The visual arts are crucially important to the Barbican’s success. The Art Gallery is dedicated to the presentation of exhibitions covering modern and contemporary art, design/architecture and photography, whereas The Curve is devoted to the commissioning of large scale site specific installations by contemporary artists. The Barbican aims to serve both artists and audiences and excels in the presentation of exhibitions that are thoughtful, curatorially ambitious and often focus on timely reassessments and inter-disciplinary practice.

In this fixed term role, you will be responsible for researching, developing and delivering alongside a Barbican curator two solo photography exhibitions to be presented at Barbican Art Gallery in summer 2018. Working closely with a Barbican curator, the Assistant Curator will support the production of two exhibition catalogues and the accompanying public programme.

With significant experience of working in the field of Photography, and the ability to project manage exhibitions and an associated public programme, you will also have excellent knowledge of 20th and 21st Century photography practices, experience of working on major photography exhibitions, and have a demonstrable network of contacts in this area.

The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships both internally and externally at all levels. The ability to work to tight deadlines and maintain a calm, ordered approach, with excellent attention to detail is essential.
