MoMA’s Department of Architecture and Design is seeking an Assistant or Associate Curator of Contemporary Architecture. The department holds a comprehensive collection including drawings, models, architectural fragments, photographs, and archives such as Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright. The role focuses on contemporary architecture since 1990, curating exhibitions, managing the collection, producing publications, and mentoring junior staff.
Position Overview
Reporting to the Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design, the Curator will manage the architecture collection, organize exhibitions and programs, develop acquisitions, contribute to scholarship, and engage with the architecture community locally, nationally, and internationally. The position may be conferred at the Assistant or Associate level depending on experience and academic credentials.
Main Responsibilities
- Manage and develop deep knowledge of the contemporary architecture collection
- Research, recommend, and present potential acquisitions or gifts
- Curate exhibitions, gallery rotations, and special collection-based shows
- Collaborate with internal departments on exhibitions, publications, and public programs
- Represent the Department at conferences, symposia, and Museum committees
- Mentor and supervise junior staff
- Conduct gallery and studio visits to monitor emerging and established architects
Candidate Profile
- Bachelor of Architecture or Master’s degree in architecture or urban studies; PhD preferred for Associate level
- 4–6 years relevant experience for Assistant Curator; 6–8 years for Associate Curator
- Expertise in contemporary architectural practice and social/political history of architecture
- Prior museum or comparable curatorial experience preferred
- Strong writing, communication, project management, and supervisory skills
- Well-connected within the New York architectural scene; awareness of local and international developments
- Fluency in English; additional languages preferred
