FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Division of Humanities & the Arts at The City College of New York seeks candidates for a one-year Post-Doctoral Teaching Fellow – Assistant Professor (non-tenure track) in the area of Black Culture for appointment in Spring 2022.
This post-doctoral teaching fellowship includes release time to support research at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. We seek a recent Ph.D. working on the cultural production of Black populations across the globe. To complement existing faculty, we would particularly welcome a scholar exploring Black Culture outside of the U.S. and/or a scholar with a comparative focus. In addition to conducting research and teaching the fellow will develop and supervise innovative experiential learning opportunities in the form of internships that place students with the Schomburg. We invite applicants with PhDs from interdisciplinary programs (such as Black or Africana Studies), provided they employ humanistic research methods; as well as applicants with PhDs in any humanities discipline(s), including but not limited to History, Philosophy, Literatures, Music History, Art History, Theater History, or Media Studies. The fellow will be appointed to the most appropriate humanities department. Contingent on satisfactory performance reviews, at the end of the yearlong fellowship the College will appoint the fellow to a tenure track line in our newly formed Black Studies Department.

Founded in 1847, the City College of New York (CCNY) is a public institution with public purpose, producing citizens who make an impact on the cultural, social, and economic vitality of New York, the nation, and the world. Located in Harlem, we are a Hispanic Serving Institution, and 66% of our full-time undergraduates attend the college tuition free. We work to integrate the city’s cultural resources into our humanities curricula and, in turn, to graduate students who are prepared to serve as the curators, directors, archivists, educators, and stewards of New York City’s cultural heritage. City College pioneered Black Studies in the aftermath of protests that took place at CCNY in 1969. The Black Studies Program has been an area of growth in the Division of Humanities and Arts and City College; it currently attracts more than a thousand students each year to its classes. The College and the Division of Humanities and the Arts are currently working to build the Program into a Black Studies Department that collaborates extensively with other departments. The Black Studies Program runs our annual Langston Hughes Festival, which since 1978 has celebrated the literary legacy of the poet laureate of Harlem by awarding a medal to the most distinguished writers of the African diaspora. City College is also home to the Dominican Studies Institute, the nation’s first university-based research institute devoted to the study of people of Dominican descent in the United States and other parts of the world.
The Schomburg Center is recognized as the premier repository documenting the global Black experience. Beginning with Arturo Schomburg’s initial donation of five thousand items in 1926 to the Negro Collection of Literature, History, and Prints at what was then the 135th Street Branch Library, it today holds more than eleven million items —books, manuscripts, prints, films, sound recordings, and art work — across five divisions and is one of four research branches of the New York Public Library.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum qualifications include PhD in Black or Africana Studies or related field; evidence of a serious commitment to scholarship; record of outstanding teaching; commitment to teaching, research, and service, and to the mission of public higher education.
