The American University of Paris (AUP) invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor position in the Department of Art History and Fine Arts, starting August 2026. The university seeks a specialist in a pre-1900 period with expertise in a geographic region outside Europe (e.g., Asia, Africa, the Middle East, colonial Latin America, or Indigenous arts of the Americas or Oceania).
Responsibilities
- Teach introductory undergraduate courses from a global perspective and advanced classes in area(s) of expertise
- Develop curriculum and contribute to diversifying the program’s geographic scope
- Integrate Paris-based collections, museums, and architecture into teaching, with attention to colonialism and cultural heritage
- Maintain active research agenda
- Participate in departmental service, student advising, and faculty governance
- Contribute to AUP’s liberal arts mission and first-year program
Candidate Profile
- Ph.D. in Art History (completed at time of application)
- Research and teaching expertise in a pre-1900 field outside Europe
- Ability to teach across multiple geographic areas is desirable
- Interest in anthropology, architecture, or material culture welcomed
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence and scholarship
- Familiarity with liberal arts education, skill development, and assessment is highly valued
- Capacity to work in a multicultural environment essential
- EU citizenship/right to work in France is helpful, but not required at application stage
