Brown University’s Department of the History of Art and Architecture is seeking an Assistant Professor whose scholarship examines European art and architecture from approximately the fifteenth to the eighteenth century.

The department is particularly interested in candidates whose work considers Europe’s relationships and connections with the wider world.

About the Role

The successful candidate will conduct original research and teach introductory and specialised courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

They will also contribute to mentoring and interdisciplinary collaboration across Brown University, building connections with students and faculty working in different departments and fields.

The position offers an opportunity to expand the study of early modern European art and architecture through geographically connected, cross-cultural or global approaches.

Responsibilities

The Assistant Professor will:

• Conduct and publish original research in art or architectural history;
• Teach introductory and specialised undergraduate courses;
• Teach and supervise postgraduate students;
• Mentor students at different stages of their studies;
• Contribute to the academic activities of the Department of the History of Art and Architecture;
• Develop interdisciplinary collaborations across Brown University; and
• Support the research and teaching missions of the University’s diverse academic community.

Requirements

Applicants must:

• Hold a doctorate in Art History, Architectural History or a closely related discipline by 1 July 2027;
• Demonstrate outstanding potential for scholarly research;
• Have expertise in European art or architecture from approximately the 1400s to the 1700s;
• Show a commitment to teaching both introductory and specialised courses;
• Be able to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; and
• Demonstrate the potential to contribute to interdisciplinary research, teaching and mentoring.

Candidates whose research examines relationships between Europe and other regions of the world are particularly encouraged to apply.
