Position: John H. Foster Associate Curator for Pre- Modern Art

SUMMARY:
Founded in 1956, the Asia Society’s purpose is to navigate shared futures for Asia and the world across policy, arts and culture, education, sustainability, business, and technology. We provide a platform for dialogue and encourage a diversity of views as we try to find the most effective ways forward. Headquartered in New York City, the organization has 12 other Centers around the world, a global staff of 235, and an annual global operating budget in excess of $44m. The John H. Foster Associate Curator for Traditional Asian Art will assist the Deputy Director and Vice President to develop and implement a program of innovative and high-quality exhibitions and associated programs that will further enhance the reputation of the Asia Society as a leading presenter of Asian arts and culture in the United States and globally and will help to build partnerships and to work with colleagues to nurture support and widen impact of exhibitions.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Develop proposals of traditional Asian art with an emphasis on new scholarship and new ideas on Asian arts and culture.
• Actively soliciting or jointly developing proposals with partner museums and organizations.
• Identify and cultivate collectors and donors with the view to Friends of Asian Arts membership, donations of art works or support of exhibitions. (At any given time there should be 5 donors of interest.) This includes writing content narratives
for grant applications.
• Documentation, interpretation, and presentation of the Mr. And Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection.
• Public lectures on the Rockefeller Collection and on exhibitions.
• Responding to questions on Asian art from public and media.
• Other duties, as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS:
• Ph.D. in Asian art history and 6-8 years related experience preferred.
• Wide knowledge of Asian art and culture, including at least one Asian language.
• Interest of a broad range of Asian arts, including modern and contemporary art.
