
Associate Curator
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following reflects the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami’s definition of essential functions for this position, but does not restrict the tasks that may be assigned. The Interim Director & Chief Curator may assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position at any time.
Exhibition Planning:
• Works with Interim Director & Chief Curator to implement ICA’s mission and vision through the proposal and development of exhibitions
• Develop proposals for ICA Miami programs, including commissions and collaborations with regional partners
• Serve as liaison between ICA Miami and exhibiting artists and partners, as necessary
• Responsible for maintaining exhibition object list in coordination with ICA’s Registrar & Exhibitions Manager.
• Development and maintenance of exhibition budget
• Provide support and oversight in order to meet exhibition deadlines
Collection Management:
• Work with curatorial team and Acquisitions Committee to implement collection strategic plan and propose works for acquisition
• Create scholarship on works in ICA Miami’s permanent collection
• Cultivate targeted gifts of Acquisition funds and works
• Remain informed of collection management principles and procedures in the field
• Work closely with Registration and Conservation staff in regards to information and use of Collections objects
Education & Programs:
• Oversee and propose programs for ICA Speaks (high-impact lectures), ICA Performs (world-class
performances), and ICA IDEAS (exhibition-based programs).
• Work with Education department staff to create informative didactic material for exhibitions and
educational programs.
Scholarship and Editorial:
• Work with the Associate Director to develop content for ICA’s web site and its IDEAS editorial platform
General Curatorial and Clerical Support:
• Research permanent collection, acquisitions, exhibitions, and special projects including exhibition catalogs
QUALIFICATIONS:
A combination of experience and education that demonstrates possession of the necessary knowledge and abilities for this position is desired as noted…
• Four-five years of experience as a curator or Associate curator in a museum, gallery, Private collection or cultural organization.
• Demonstrated expertise in live and performance-based art, and new media
• Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to relate and communicate with all members of Museum and Fine Arts community
• Possess a high level of initiative
• A Master’s degree from an accredited college with specialization in curatorial studies or museum studies
• Ability to achieve and maintain best curatorial practices
• Knowledge of museum and exhibition methods and practices, including the proven methods of developing, planning and implementing museum exhibitions
• Flexibility and follow-through on work assignments
• Must be detail oriented and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Proficient in museum practices and methods, including art handling best practices, artwork care and storage
