Department Summary
The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) at the University of Oregon is the only academic art museum in Oregon accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. JSMA features engaging exhibitions, significant collections of historic and contemporary art, and exciting educational programs that support the University’s academic mission and the diverse interests of its off-campus communities. The JSMA’s collections galleries present selections from its extensive holdings of Chinese, Japanese, Korean and American art. Special exhibitions galleries display works from the collection and on loan, representing many cultures of the world, past and present. The JSMA continues a long tradition of bridging international cultures and offers a welcoming destination for discovery and education centered on artistic expression that deepens the appreciation and understanding of the human condition.
Position Summary
The part-time, Associate Curator of photography will research, promote, and develop the collection of photography at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, including: draft and finalize a photography collections development plan; vet with stakeholders on and off campus; cultivate photographers and collectors for gifts; prioritize potential purchases and advise curators on photography opportunities in their areas; serve on JSMA Collections Committee, recommending acquisitions and reviewing other collections business. This position will also advance scholarship and update database records on the objects and artists represented in the permanent collection, including addressing any incomplete data to ensure accuracy of database and identifying works in need of conservation.
As assigned, the Associate Curator will strategically present photographs in the collection through installation, publication, and public programs to foster community appreciation and scholarly familiarity. The Associate Curator will be responsible for preparing a checklist and interpretive materials, organizing and managing public programs, and creating an exhibition evaluation plan. This position will report to the McCosh Curator, though the Associate Curator will also assist the other curators and collections management staff as needed with projects and research related to photography.
Minimum Requirements
• MA or PhD in art
• Curatorial experience working in photography department of a museum.
Professional Competencies
• Broad knowledge of photography as an art form, from earliest times to the present.
Preferred Qualifications
• Familiarity with JSMA photography collection.
