The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art seeks a dynamic and scholarly professional to lead research, care, and growth of its historic American art collection, spanning paintings, sculpture, and works on paper from the 18th to early 20th centuries. The role includes developing exhibitions, conducting scholarly research, engaging audiences, and building relationships with collectors, galleries, and donors. Candidates may apply at either Associate Curator or full Curator level depending on experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage, research, and interpret the historic American art collection.
  • Develop original exhibitions and gallery installations.
  • Conduct scholarly research and publish related work.
  • Collaborate with internal teams on museum projects and initiatives.
  • Build relationships with collectors, galleries, and donors to support acquisitions.
  • Deliver tours, lectures, and presentations to diverse audiences.

Person Specification

Associate Curator Level

  • Education: Master’s in Art History, American Studies, or related field (ABD/PhD preferred)
  • Experience: 5+ years of curatorial experience in a collecting institution focused on historic American art
  • Proven success in exhibitions, acquisitions, and publications
  • Strong communication, diplomacy, and relationship-building skills
  • Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and audience engagement

Curator Level

  • Education: Master’s in Art History, American Studies, or related field (ABD/PhD preferred)
  • Experience: 7+ years of curatorial experience in a collecting institution focused on historic American art
  • Proven success in exhibitions, acquisitions, and publications
  • Strong communication, diplomacy, and relationship-building skills
  • Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and audience engagement
