Associate Director for Exhibitions
The J. Paul Getty Museum invites applications to the position of Associate Director for Exhibitions. The ideal candidate will be a strategic and collaborative leader who will both develop – in collaboration with the Director of the Museum and the Associate Director for Collections – and realize the Museum’s renowned and critically acclaimed program of temporary exhibitions of the highest quality, importance, and impact. Working across departments, including curatorial and conservation, design, education and interpretive media, preparation, registrar’s office, publications, communications, and development, and throughout the Getty Trust, this position will oversee all aspects of the Museum’s exhibitions program at both the Getty Center and the Getty Villa, where currently over 20 temporary exhibitions are presented annually across the two sites. This position is also responsible for continuing to build and maintain strong relationships with a wide range of national and international partners with whom the Getty collaborates. The Associate Director for Exhibitions will foster collaboration and transparency between all exhibition team members to ensure that excellence and creativity in scholarship, design, display, and interpretation of exhibitions are supported through disciplined budget development, oversight, and systematic planning. The position will also be responsible for overseeing all permanent collection gallery reinstallations, including the current major project of reinstalling almost all of the Getty Villa galleries. The Associate Director for Exhibitions reports to the Director of the Museum and is a member of the Museum’s Senior Management Team.
Major Job Responsibilities:
The Program: Working with the Director and Associate Director for Collections, the Associate Director for Exhibitions will:

Organize a dynamic and engaging series of temporary exhibitions based on innovative research and sound scholarship that enhances and complements the Museum’s permanent collection and strives for excellence in all aspects.

Leverage strategic partnerships with museums, lenders, and cultural ministries to develop exhibition projects of the highest caliber.

Foster innovation and experimentation in developing and enhancing interpretive strategies and new technologies, encouraging open-mindedness amongst colleagues.

Ensure that the Getty’s exhibitions program is varied and diverse in subject matter and approach, with opportunities both to synthesize existing scholarship and to take risks with novel and innovative initiatives.

Work collaboratively with Museum and other Getty staff, Council members, and Getty trustees, as well as external resources and donors, in the implementation of this vision.

Provide complete financial oversight for the program as a whole, including the establishment of detailed project budgets and accurate reporting and forecasting.
