Asst. Curator for Modern & Contemporary Art 

Assists with curatorial activities, which may include responsibility for a sub-collection. Assists with the development of collections policies. Conducts independent research on subjects related to museum collections. Assists with developing exhibition catalogs with responsibility for catalog design, production and editing. Organizes, designs and oversees installation of exhibit and displays. May develop and organize educational programming related to sub-collection. Assists with collection development, including researching potential gifts and purchases and/or developing contacts with individuals, foundations, corporations and federal agencies. May write grants. Oversees research inquiries and other correspondence relating to collections. Manages use of, and access to, collections. May supervise maintenance of collections records. Oversees the work of curatorial interns, student employees and/or volunteers. May monitor the budget of sub-collections. 

About the Unit
The Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago (smartmuseum.uchicago.edu), located in one of the nation’s greatest cities for art and on the campus of one of the world’s leading research universities, opens the world through art and ideas. The Smart Museum is widely known for its ambitious exhibitions and programs; its collaborations with scholars and students have animated its collection both historically and conceptually. The Museum plays a central role in the University’s arts initiative, which has brought extraordinary new focus and energy to the arts on campus. At the same time, the Museum collaborates closely with other units on campus as well as institutions and scholars in the city and across the country. Its exhibition projects often arise from partnerships with other institutions and travel nationally and internationally. The Smart Museum is also deeply dedicated to engaging its surrounding communities through programming that offers visitors of all ages a transformative experience involving significant and often unexpected examples of artistic expression. This is an exciting moment to join the Smart Museum, as the Museum is embarking on the creation of a compelling vision for the future under the leadership of a recently appointed Dana Feitler Director. 

Unit Job Summary
Reporting to the Museum Director, the Assistant Curator for Modern and Contemporary Art (ACFMACA) also works closely the Curator for Global Contemporary Art to create a collaborative environment that encourages the development of programs and exhibitions. As a thoughtful member of the curatorial team, the ACFMACA will bring in-depth knowledge about Art history and museum practice to assist in implement an exciting vision for the museum with his/her colleagues and be driven by interests in artists, scholarship, innovation and public engagement.
Time is divided between specific projects and general curatorial work within the department, which includes research on the collection and new acquisitions, work on the presentation of the collection, management of certain of special exhibition projects, and opportunities to give public lectures. The ACFMACA will be part of a collaborative environment that encourages the development of programs and exhibitions both working together as a curatorial team and with faculty and students across all areas including collections, exhibitions, research, publications, engagement and education.
