CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: MA in Curatorial Practice

Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Chulalongkorn University
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: MA in Curatorial Practice

The first international, Master of Arts in Curatorial Practice in Thailand offers an integrated two-year course for curatorial practitioners interested in developing their theoretical and professional skillsets and experience.

This MA programme approaches curatorial practice through a cross-cultural transdisciplinary methodology and a decentred pedagogy. Lectures, workshops, seminars, and fieldwork are supported by work experience at an art institution; knowledge gained from working with top curators on exhibitions and events in context will expand the curatorial horizons of young curators.

An international faculty of world-renowned curators, lecturers and cultural practitioners delivers the programme from local and global perspectives. Each faculty member brings their own unique experience, and they come from all corners of the global art world. Course advisers are Professor Rirkrit Tiravanija, a member of the Faculty of Arts at Columbia University, Dr. Gridthiya Gaweewong, Artistic Director at The Jim Thompson Art Center and Sydney based art advisor and curator John Cruthers.

The Programme Director is Professor Kamol Phaosavasdi, a pioneer in Thai conceptual, installation and video art. He leads a team of specialist lecturers and curators, from the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, including Visiting Curator Zoe Butt. Course participants will work with Guest Lecturers from Thailand and internationally recognised art institutions. Guest Lecturers include Professor Dr. Patrick D. Flores, Professor May Adadol Ingawanij, Associate Professor Shefong Chung, Dr. Yu Jin Seng, and Pooja Sood.

The curriculum enables students to critically assess mainstream curatorial practice, to challenge establish norms, and to push the boundaries of contemporary practices. Critical discourse is supplemented with real work experience and collaborative projects such as exhibitions, events, and performances.

Blended learning integrates online lectures, seminars, and workshops, as well as face-to-face onsite studies, which offer access to the faculty’s fully equipped and recently installed Digital Art Hub and Studio, located on the main campus. Students will collaborate on events held at the faculty’s custom-made gallery and learning space, ART4C.

Students are encouraged to develop transnational curatorial relationships and a network of artists and collaborators during their studies – the programme enables them to access art and cultural networks in the region and globally.

As one of Southeast Asia’s art hubs, Bangkok is an exciting and stimulating place to study.  The Faculty of Fine Arts, Chulalongkorn University has been at the forefront of art education in Thailand and the region for more than 30 years and is located on the main campus in downtown Bangkok – within walking distance of galleries and art institutions.
