Being Scene Exhibition: Call for Curator, Workman Arts
Workman Arts is seeking a guest Curator or team of Curators to develop and curate the 20thanniversary of our annual Being Scene visual art/multimedia exhibition. Every year, Being Sceneexhibits a survey of over 100 artworks by member artists and artists with lived experience of mental health and addiction issues. For the 20th anniversary, we are looking for proposals that speak to the current social climate as it relates to mental health and continues to celebrate Workman member artists and artists with lived experience. Workman Arts supports proposals that offer to showcase artists’ most recent endeavours as well as works that incite conversation and promote a range of intersectional narratives.
History of Being Scene: The Being Scene exhibition began 20 years ago on the grounds of CAMH. Members of the larger art community were invited every year to jury submitted work by Workman member artists and artists in the community who self-identified with lived experience. Every year artists gave shape to compelling ideas and narratives, covering a wide range of conceptual and material approaches from diverse experiences. A key feature of the exhibition was to celebrate the artists and their work. Workman Arts moved to its current location in the former Equity Showcase Theatre at 651 Dufferin in 2009, nonetheless the annual Being Scene continued. The exhibit showed in spaces such as The Gladstone Hotel and the Toronto Media Arts Centre [TMAC]. In November of 2020, Workman Arts will be moving back to the newly developed CAMH Queen Street campus, and Being Scene will continue to thrive in local spaces.
