From August 1–September 20, 2024, Union Hall Art Space in downtown Denver will be accepting curatorial proposals from creatives of all types living and working in the Denver Metropolitan area to be considered for a month-long exhibition timeslot as a part of Rough Gems, an annual mentorship program for new and emerging curators. Three proposals will be accepted, and the exhibitions will take place from January to April of 2025 at Union Hall. Selected curators will receive a $900 stipend and each artist will receive a $300 stipend for their participation.
An information session and happy hour with Rough Gems alumni will be held in person at Union Hall on Wednesday, September 11 from 6:00-7:30 pm MT. This informal meeting will spotlight former Rough Gems curators who will speak about their experiences producing an exhibition at Union Hall and answer questions from prospective applicants.
Deadline to apply is September 20 at 11:59pm MT.
Applications must be emailed to info@unionhalldenver.org in PDF format with the curator(s) last names followed by ‘Rough Gems 2025 Proposal’ in the subject line.
Applications will be reviewed through a jury consisting of Union Hall staff, board, and community members.
Proposals are accepted from creatives of all types 18 and older who reside in the Denver Metropolitan area.
Students, emerging curators, artists, writers, art historians, and anyone interested in art practices or exhibition-organizing is encouraged to apply.
Prior curatorial experience is not required.
There is no entry fee.
Curators who include their own artwork as a part of their proposal will not be considered.
Up to two curators and up to six artists can be included in a proposal.
Union Hall accepts proposals that include mediums outside of the visual arts, including, but not limited to: music, poetry, dance, film, and performance of all kinds.
In addition to an exhibition, each selected applicant is required to host a curatorial talk, as well as one additional supplementary event.
