Introduction: Museum International’s upcoming issue (Vol. 74, Nº 297 – 298) is dedicated to “Museums, sustainability, and sustainable development.” In light of pressing social, economic, and environmental issues, the role of museums in building sustainable communities is more crucial than ever.
Museum’s Pivotal Role: In a world facing socio-ecological collapse, museums play a vital role in promoting sustaining practices for a habitable world. This issue invites authors to explore various aspects of museums’ roles in sustainability, locally and globally.
Diverse Perspectives: Sustainability and sustainable development have diverse interpretations globally. Local priorities lead to different actions. Authors are encouraged to share their insights, critiques, and ideas about how museums can contribute to sustainable development. This discussion is vital for ICOM and the museum sector as a whole.
Topics of Interest: Contributors are welcome to explore a range of topics, including:
- Museum as a social and community activator.
- Museum governance models and operations.
- Museums and public programs (exhibitions, activities, education programs).
- Museum economics.
- Museums’ environmental footprint.

Submission Process:
- Submit abstracts (250-300 words) in English, French, or Spanish to publications@icom.museum.
- Include the paper’s title, author’s name, and professional background.
- Submission deadline: February 20, 2023.
Review Process: All abstracts will undergo a blind review by experts in the field. Selected contributors will receive guidelines for completing their full articles.
