NEMO invites applications for a researcher to develop a report on how museums can address climate anxiety and foster emotional resilience. Commissioned by the NEMO Working Group Sustainability and Climate Action, the publication will provide guidance and inspiration for museum professionals navigating the mental health impacts of the climate crisis.
About the Project
In 2026, the NEMO Working Group Sustainability and Climate Action (SAC) will explore how museums can respond to the growing challenge of climate anxiety. The report will serve as a resource for museum professionals, offering strategies to support mental health and promote hope and agency during the climate crisis.
Focus of the Publication
The report should include:
- An introduction to the topic and NEMO’s perspective
- An explanation of eco-anxiety and its social and psychological dimensions, supported by interviews with experts
- 6–10 examples of why and how museums matter in supporting mental health during the climate crisis, each illustrated with an image and representing a range of regions and museum types
- A practical guide with strategies for programming and community engagement that foster resilience
- A curated list of resources for museums addressing climate anxiety
Research Requirements
The appointed researcher will:
- Develop the publication (approx. 25–30 pages) based on the proposed outline
- Conduct interviews with 3–4 specialists in fields such as psychology, climate communication, and policy
- Collect examples from 7–10 museums across at least six countries, including interviews with professionals
- Carry out bibliographic research and integrate relevant case studies
- Collaborate with the Working Group for feedback in monthly online meetings
Timeline and Budget
The first draft is due in June 2026, with the final text expected to be delivered on 1 September 2026. Proofreading and design will be arranged separately by NEMO.
Applicants may consider the estimated budget (€1,500 incl. VAT) and adjust expectations and anticipated results according to what they deem possible.
