Title: Curator of Art II – Visual Arts Gallery Manager

Duties:
Functional Summary:
This part-time position will perform all duties related to exhibition preparation including, but not limited to installation, de-installation, shipping and receiving artwork, and coordination of necessary staff and materials. The Gallery Manager must have excellent time and project management skills, as well as the ability to work independently or within a team. This is a significant position, integral to the function and excellence of the operation of the gallery.
Duties:
-Installation/de-installation of exhibitions (i.e. hanging artwork) and lighting
-Packing, crating and shipping both framed and unframed artworks of high value domestically and worldwide
-General maintenance/stocking of installation and packing materials
-On-site installation/deliveries to clients
-Pick-ups/deliveries/errands to framers, conservators, auction houses, galleries, etc.
-Work with the Gallery Director to develop new sources of funding support
-Serve on the Art and Artifact Collection Committee and help oversee the loaning of work from the permanent collection and maintaining an active catalog of works, their condition and location, including conducting research on objects in permanent collection as well as objects proposed for acquisition
-Develop promotional materials, including press releases, postcards, and HTML emails for exhibitions
-Grant writing to secure funding for programming
-Oversee student worker for gallery visiting hours
-Coordinating catering, alcohol waiver, and overseeing receptions
Qualifications:
CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER
Three years (36 months) of experience in the following areas of preparation:
- experience and/or training that provided a knowledge of art history and the history and the techniques used in the preservation, restoration, and/or exhibition of museum collections comparable to that normally provided in Bachelor Degree program.
- college coursework in art history or studio art with significant, course work in art history or closely related field of study that included credit for techniques used in the preservation, restoration, and/or exhibition of museum collections:
– Associate Degree or 60 semester hours equals one year
– 90 semester hours equals two years
– Bachelor’s degree or 120 semester hours equals three years
- One year (12 months) of work experience comparable to next lower level of this series.
*Note: A Master’s Degree in Art History or closely related field may be substituted for one (1) year (12 months) of experience.
Preferred:
-Bachelor degree in Visual Arts, Art History, or similar field of study
-Capable of prioritizing multiple tasks and requests
-Must be flexible, organized, and communicate effectively with all staff
-Must be able to work efficiently and independently
-Self-starter, dedicated, and enthusiastic problem solver
-Demonstrated knowledge of gallery installation techniques
-Experience with art handling, storage, packing, crating and installation
-Experience in carpentry and safe handling of power tools
-Familiarity with Mac computer systems and software
-Able to lift heavy objects (50 lbs+)
-Ability to work evenings and weekends on occasion
-At least 2 years experience as preparator in gallery, museum setting, or arts organization
-Experience overseeing staff
