About the Role
The Exhibitions department at Ikon Gallery, led by the Artistic Director (Exhibitions), is responsible for research, planning, and delivering exhibitions in the main galleries at Brindleyplace. This includes public programmes, publications, and national and international partnerships. The department also occasionally handles off-site projects with various colleagues.
The Curator is crucial for supporting the Artistic Director (Exhibitions) in research, planning, delivery, and fundraising for exhibitions and public programmes. Responsibilities include conceptualizing and delivering selected exhibitions, collaborating with artists and guest curators on artwork development, selection, and interpretation. The Curator also initiates exhibitions and projects that span regional and international contemporary art and reflect Birmingham and the West Midlands’ cultural diversity.
As the department manager, the Curator ensures the effective administration of exhibitions, organizing transport and insurance, registrar duties, and producing associated publications. The Curator manages assistant curatorial staff and works closely with various departments and colleagues both within Ikon and externally to ensure effective communication and interpretation of exhibitions.
Passion for contemporary art is essential. The Curator contributes to the gallery’s creative life by staying updated on contemporary art developments, attending Ikon’s public programmes and exhibitions, and representing the gallery at external events.
