Tirana Art Residency – Vila 31 x Art Explora
Tirana Art Residency – Vila 31 x Art Explora is a new residency program founded by Art Explora in Tirana, Albania. Vila 31, formerly the residence of dictator Enver Hoxha and renovated by NeM Architects, aims to reappropriate this historic site for public use. The residency aspires to become a center for contemporary artistic creation and research from a transdisciplinary, international, and transgenerational perspective, with a focus on Albanian and Balkan artists.
An ambitious cultural program will be developed in partnership with local institutions, municipalities, art workers, and associations. This includes exhibitions, workshops, film screenings, discussions, performances, and festivals open to the public.
Art Explora
Since 2019, Art Explora has fostered cultural exchanges and renewed the dialogue between the arts and the public on various scales. In collaboration with artists, museums, international organizations, and local cultural players, the foundation supports innovative artistic projects and unique cultural experiences. By leveraging mobility and digital technology, Art Explora broadens public access and engagement.
To fulfill its mission, the foundation coordinates several projects:
- Art Explora Academy: A free digital platform for learning art history.
- Hangar Y: A venue for contemporary creation and dialogue between the arts and the public.
- MuMo (Mobile Museum): A collaboration with Centre Pompidou, the Art Explora Festival, and its museum-boat, launched in March 2024, traveling the Mediterranean for two years.
In 2021, the Art Explora Foundation launched its first residency program in Paris in collaboration with Cité internationale des arts in Montmartre. This program has welcomed more than 70 artists from 39 different nationalities for residencies lasting from three to six months.
