Introduction
The Migelien Gerritzen Fellowship invites applications for conservation and scientific research. The fellowship focuses on utilizing the Rijksmuseum’s collection and resources.
Application Process
International and independent research proposals are encouraged. These proposals should offer new insights into the Rijksmuseum’s collection, its history, and activities. The Fellowship Programme aims to support scholarly investigation and contribute to academic discussions. It also seeks to strengthen the relationship between the museum and universities. Selected candidates will conduct part of their research at the Rijksmuseum. They will have access to the museum’s expertise, collections, library, and laboratories. The program also includes workshops and excursions to facilitate knowledge exchange.
Fellowship Details
This Fellowship is for early career scholars to research art works and historical artefacts. Research should focus on the Rijksmuseum collection or projects initiated there. Suitable projects could include technical research on museum objects, analytical techniques, preventive conservation, or treatment methodologies. Fellows will work alongside the museum’s conservators, curators, and scientists. The Fellowship aims to produce a publication, with details agreed upon by the Fellow and the Rijksmuseum. Fellows will receive workspace in the museum to encourage idea sharing and experience exchange. They will also have access to the Research Library Collections, collection documentation, and conservation laboratories.
Eligibility
The Fellowship is open to MA graduates, PhD students, and post-doctoral candidates. Candidates should have completed their MA degree, be involved in PhD research, or have a PhD degree at the application date. Open to all nationalities and specialisms, including conservators and scientists. Candidates need to demonstrate research skills, academic credentials, and proficiency in English. Knowledge of Dutch or German is an advantage but not required.
Funding
Fellows receive a stipend of €39,000 for MA graduate/PhD Fellows or €45,000 for postdoctoral Fellows (subject to taxes and deductions) for a 12-month period starting September 2024. The Fellowship includes limited travel for research in Europe up to €5,000 annually. Visa fees for the Fellow are covered, but not for dependents.
