Conservator of Media
The Elise S. Haas Conservation Department of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art seeks a Conservator of Media to join their progressive team of conservators committed to the care, research, and display of the art of our time.
The Conservator of Media works collaboratively and interdepartmentally in the oversight of all aspects of conservation of SFMOMA’s media arts collection within all five curatorial departments.
Responsibilities include on-going care of media artworks, including examination, conservation treatment, documentation, consultation, and general collections care, with special attention to supporting and developing SFMOMA’s MediaWiki as multi-voice documentation tool integrated within the museum’s system landscape. Cross-disciplinary research is deeply valued, particularly with new accessions and when working with artists, their estates or foundations, across the active life of media works.
The Conservator of Media works collaboratively with conservators in the department to:
• Stay current with international approaches to the conservation of contemporary art.
• Explore and develop new methods for documentation that more fully represent the stories held by works in the collection.
• Support and develop equitable conservation training at multiple levels, including the postgraduate Fellowship in the Conservation of Contemporary Art and pre-program opportunities.
• Acknowledge that our profession is not neutral, and that we must intentionally and regularly revisit our assumptions, approaches, and practice in the work we do to promote a more equitable and inclusive practice.
