Contemporary Art Curatorial Fellow
The MassArt Art Museum (MAAM), opening to the public in February 2020, is the newest contemporary art museum in New England. Formerly known as the Bakalar & Paine Galleries, we are a non-collecting kunsthalle hosting contemporary art exhibitions featuring professional artists from around the world. Exhibitions and events at MAAM are free and open to the public and we are a W.A.G.E.-certified museum.
This part-time administrative position is designed to broaden the experience of graduate students embarking on professional and academic careers in art history, museum studies, or related fields who are considering a museum profession. The Fellow will work ~7 hours/week on a weekday onsite (days/times negotiable). Occasional evening and weekend hours for special events may be needed. The fellow assists with a broad range of curatorial activities, including exhibition planning and coordination (research, writing, shipping, and logistics for upcoming shows and related events), correspondence with artists, galleries, and lenders, and assistance with gallery publications and online media.
Minimum qualifications: BA in Art History, Museum Studies, or a related field.
Preferred qualifications: Well-versed in contemporary art, MA in relevant field (completed or in progress), and previous experience in a professional art gallery or museum setting.
The successful candidate must have an interest in contemporary art; familiarity with best practices associated with the operation of a museum/gallery; excellent organizational, time management, interpersonal, and communication skills; flexibility to accomplish time-sensitive tasks and ability to adapt to meet deadlines with little supervision; attention to detail, ability to produce excellent writing, and strong proofreading skills; and computer and basic social media literacy.
Ideally, position will be held September 2019 – May 2020.
Applications will be reviewed starting July 15, 2019.
