Position Summary
The Curator plays a pivotal role in the successful delivery of exhibitions, commissions, and special projects at Somerset House Trust. This involves working closely with guest collaborators and internal teams to bring a diverse range of artistic expressions to life. The role demands a deep passion for contemporary culture and the ability to work across various art forms.
Key Responsibilities
Programme Development
- Collaborate with the Director of Exhibitions, Senior Curator, and Head of Exhibitions Management to deliver multidisciplinary exhibitions and projects.
- Research and propose new project ideas and collaborative opportunities aligned with the exhibition strategy.
- Serve as a co-curator with guest curators, artists, and creatives to develop accessible and relevant exhibitions.
- Maintain and expand networks within the art community to foster partnerships and execute projects.
- Implement initiatives to engage broad and diverse audiences and ensure alignment with Somerset House’s goals.
Exhibition Management
- Lead projects from conception to completion in collaboration with Exhibition Managers.
- Negotiate loans and communicate with artists, institutions, and galleries.
- Ensure curatorial oversight on projects and manage curatorial teams to meet organizational standards and budget requirements.
- Develop and manage project budgets and timelines in coordination with the exhibitions team.
Community Engagement and Management
- Build collaborative relationships across departments to enhance project delivery and audience engagement.
- Contribute to public programming through talks, tours, and events.
- Manage external curators, contractors, and temporary staff as needed.
Qualifications and Skills
- Strong background in contemporary culture and the ability to engage with diverse artistic disciplines.
- Advanced degree or equivalent experience in exhibition management.
- Proven track record of working in a gallery or arts organization with experience in exhibitions and commissioning new work.
- Excellent communication, research, and writing skills.
- Ability to manage complex relationships and work collaboratively within a team.
- Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and sustainability in the arts.
