The Smithsonian Institution is seeking a Museum Curator for the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). This role focuses on advancing research, collections, and interpretation related to African American history and culture, with particular emphasis on global slavery, diaspora movements, and community life.
The curator will contribute to the development of a leading collection within the Center for the Study of Global Slavery (CSGS), while collaborating across departments including religious life, community curation, and media arts. The position combines scholarly research, collections development, and public engagement within one of the world’s most prominent museum systems.
Key Responsibilities

Conduct and lead scholarly research on slavery, the slave trade, and African diaspora histories

Develop and implement collection strategies in areas such as global slavery, religious life, and community culture

Produce academic publications and exhibition-related research

Acquire, interpret, and manage collections related to African American and diasporic experiences

Collaborate across curatorial and research centers within the museum

Participate in conferences, symposia, and public programmes

Respond to public and media inquiries
Eligibility Criteria

Degree in museum studies, history, or a related field (or equivalent experience)

Minimum one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-11 level
-
Proven experience in research, exhibitions, or publications related to slavery, diaspora, or community history

Strong written and oral communication skills

Experience in collections development and interpretation
