The main purpose of this role is to research and make publicly accessible the Iron Age and Roman conquest period collections from Britain, Ireland and continental Europe and other related collections across the Museum in support of the Museum Operating Plan and all relevant Museum strategies.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
- To undertake and help raise money to support research on the Continental Iron Age (including Iberian and Italic material held in the department of Greece & Rome) and Roman conquest period collections (primarily material from Britain that dates to the period c AD43 to c AD70) including projects involving external partners.
- To make these collections, and knowledge about them, publicly accessible via publication, digital, display, and broadcast.
- To lead on up-grading the documentation of these collections.
- To support and improve the display of these collections in the Gallery of Celtic Europe and elsewhere both on- and off-site and in line with the museum’s display strategy.
- To act as an advocate for the Museum.
- To contribute to general income generation for the Museum.
- To report on cases of Iron Age and Roman conquest period finds reported for export license or as Treasure in a timely manner, advise on Portable Antiquities and acquisitions and assist and support the work of the Treasure Secretariat.
- To build the European Iron Age collections through acquisition via donation and purchase.
- To work as a team member with colleagues within and beyond the department and to engage with relevant internal and external research groups.
- To collaborate with other institutions or groups nationally and internationally, and to develop or ensure good relations with relevant stakeholders.
- To assist with loans through advising potential lenders and internal administration.
- To have a good understanding of museums and relevant best practice, and share this with colleagues.
- To assist with enquiries from the public in person, in writing, by telephone and via e-mail.
- To change the focus of work as needed in line with Museum priorities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Person Specification:
- Educated to degree level (or equivalent) in archaeology with some publications in peer reviewed journals.
- Knowledge of European Iron Age and early Roman artefacts and archaeology, experience of research and publication, and excavation and fieldwork experience.
- Previously worked in a Museum or University research environment as a Finds Liaison Officer or similar.
- Some experience of management issues (people, project and budgets).
- An open and effective communicator, both written and verbal, who can also work well as part of a team.
