The Curator will be responsible for conceptualizing, developing, and organizing exhibitions of contemporary art, particularly those with a focus on Latinx art and artists. Additionally, this position will be responsible for conceptualizing and writing of scholarly publications which will accompany these exhibitions, and will serve as the co-curator of the Hammer’s biennial exhibition, Made in LA. The Curator will conduct research on the Hammer Contemporary Collection and assist in developing a strategy for the collecting of Latinx art. The Curator will work closely with the Chief Curator, Senior Curator, Museum Director, and other senior staff to develop programming for the Museum. This position will represent the Museum to the outside community, in particular with artists, galleries and donors.
Qualifications for Position
Required/Preferred
- Extensive curatorial experience, particularly in organizing exhibitions of contemporary global and US Latinx art.
- Required
- Knowledge of standard curatorial practice and collections management policies.
- Thorough knowledge of 20th and 21st century art history with emphasis on contemporary global art and Latinx art practices.
- Thorough knowledge of the contemporary art market, galleries, and museums.
- Knowledge of standard museum policy and procedures.
- Knowledge of conservation needs of works of art.
- Research skills to pursue independently exhibitions and publications.
- Basic knowledge of the printing industry as it relates to the publication of exhibition catalogues.
- Basic knowledge of fundraising strategies including granting agencies.
- Interpersonal skills to deal effectively with artists, collectors, art dealers, and museum personnel, as well as with diverse student, faculty, volunteer, community, and administrative personnel on university, local, national and international levels
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other staff members, subordinates, and administrators.
- Ability to make oral group presentations.
- Skill in writing proposals, reports, and summaries of research and curatorial projects.
- Skill in organizing, conceptualizing, and directing research.
- Fluency in Spanish
- Advanced degree in Art History or equivalent
