The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) seeks a full-time Curator and Department Head of the James Pearson Duffy Department of Contemporary Art After 1950. The DIA’s Contemporary Art collection comprises over 3,500 paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, video and installation-based works. The position oversees the DIA Contemporary Art (1950 to present) collection, acquisitions and exhibitions; collaborates with internal and external colleagues; and manages the Department’s staff. The Curator of Contemporary Art is responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with individuals in the international, national and Detroit-area contemporary art communities.
Candidates must have a proven record and experience in the following areas: developing and managing a major art collection; planning strategic acquisitions with special emphasis on emerging artists; installing and managing permanent collection galleries; developing special exhibitions and related programs; researching toward original scholarship; cultivating patrons and fundraising; managing staff and budgets, and performing related departmental duties. Successful candidates must be able to work collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
