The State Palaces, Gardens and Art Collections of Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania (SSGK M-V) preserve, research, and present the cultural and art-historical foundations of Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania. They include some of the most beautiful and significant examples of architectural history and garden art in northern Germany, as well as the ducal art collections and art treasures of international significance from antiquity to the present day.
Part of the SSGK M-V is the State Museum Schwerin, where the position of Curator of Early Art from the Middle Ages to the mid-19th century is to be newly filled. Among the collections to be supervised, the holdings of Dutch and Flemish painting of the 17th century stand out in particular for their scope and quality.
Your Responsibilities
- Scholarly supervision of the Painting & Sculpture collection (publications, inventory management, maintenance of the database for paintings, sculpture, and objects)
- Conceptualization and realization of exhibitions
- Preparation of scholarly catalogues and publications
- Strengthening and further development of the collection’s profile; proposals for acquisitions
- Close collaboration with collection management, conservators, and the education and communications unit (press, marketing, and event coordination)
- Processing loan requests and accompanying loans as courier
- Administrative duties
- Development of international cooperations, networking, fundraising, preparation of funding applications, acquisition of sponsors
- Prospectively, coordination of the future online collection
Your Profile
- University degree in art history (main subject), completed with a Master’s degree or equivalent qualification
- PhD in the field of Early Art History
- Knowledge of early modern art, especially Dutch and German painting of the 17th and 18th centuries
- Knowledge of medieval art, particularly in northern Germany
- Experience in exhibitions, publications, and art mediation/education
- Experience in controlling and monitoring project budgets
- Experience with procurement procedures and public budget management desirable
- Experience in applying for external funding
- Experience working with archives
- Very good knowledge of German (native level = C2) and very good knowledge of English (C1); good knowledge of another language, preferably Dutch, spoken and written
- Creativity, fresh ideas, and commitment
- Very good communication skills, team orientation, flexibility
