The University of Toronto Art Museum, a leading centre for contemporary art and interdisciplinary inquiry, is seeking a Curator, Exhibitions and Collections. The Curator will research, initiate, develop, and implement original, guest-curated, and collection-based exhibitions and outreach relevant to the museum’s forward-looking program.
Working closely with artists and curators of diverse backgrounds, the Curator will address current paradigms of exhibition-making and collecting, exploring how art can engage with local histories and public spaces on campus. The position combines curatorial leadership, research, and public engagement to foster inclusive, sustainable, and critically engaged practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Curate exhibitions, gallery installations, and public art projects related to the collection
- Liaise with artists, curators, and vendors to deliver innovative exhibition concepts
- Develop and implement community engagement initiatives and outreach programs
- Oversee the acquisition and management of the university’s art collection
- Supervise and mentor programming staff and casual employees
- Build partnerships within and beyond the university to support exhibitions and public programs
- Promote sustainability and accessibility in exhibition-making
- Ensure anti-racist, anti-harassment, and inclusive practices across all programming
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Curatorial Studies or equivalent education and experience
- Minimum three years of senior experience curating contemporary art and exhibitions
- Proven ability to develop art in public spaces and manage collections
- Strong project management and multitasking skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
- Demonstrated experience with acquisitions, donor relations, and grant writing
- Familiarity with administrative processes in an A-designated museum context
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Office 365)
- Commitment to anti-racist and equitable curatorial practice
Assets (Nonessential)
- Familiarity with TMS or other collection management systems
- Experience coordinating touring exhibitions
- Supervisory experience
- Fluency in a second language
