Curator of Exhibitions and Programs

Deadline: December 31, 2016
The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at The State University of New York at New Paltz (SUNY New Paltz) seeks a Curator of Exhibitions and Programs to conceive, develop, interpret and implement a dynamic range of temporary exhibitions and to develop and implement related interpretative programs. The Curator is primarily responsible for one or more exhibitions of contemporary art featuring artists with national and international reputations, a summer regional exhibition designed to serve emerging, mid-career, and under-recognized artists from the area, and the college’s annual student thesis exhibitions. The Curator curates half of the six to eight exhibitions that the museum produces annually, not including the student thesis exhibitions. In addition, the Curator works closely with guest Curators to develop, produce, and install both collection-based exhibitions as well as exhibitions of contemporary or historic art that support the academic curriculum of the college and articulate the mission of the museum. The Curator also oversees the production of exhibition catalogues that accompany most of the museum’s exhibitions.

The Curator reports to the Director and works closely with the Director and museum and campus staff to develop exhibition programming and budgets, to identify and apply for outside funds, to promote and publicize museum exhibitions and programs, and to represent the museum at community and professional events. The Curator takes an active part in campus life, participates in museum programs including donor and fundraising activities, and supervises volunteers, interns, and students. The Curator also works with the Museum’s Manager of Education and Visitor Experience and Program Manager to develop exhibition-related, interpretive programs. In addition, the Curator works collaboratively with regional institutions that partner with The Dorsky in the development of exhibitions and programs.

Qualifications: Required:

· Knowledge of contemporary art and art history, with expertise in one of the strengths of The Dorsky’s current collection: American Art, Photography, Printmaking, or Metals (decorative arts)
· Documented record of exhibitions and related scholarly publications
· The ability to communicate effectively to a wide range of audiences, as well as excellent interpersonal and organizational skills that will enable him/her to form liaisons with artists, curators, gallery directors, and media personnel
· A team player who can manage and implement multiple projects successfully

Preferred:
· Advanced degree in Art History or Museum Studies
· Curatorial experience in an art museum in an academic environment
· Knowledge of museum exhibition, collection management and program development principles and methods
· Proficiency with computer software for document and spreadsheet production, communication, database management, and digital imaging
