The Museum
Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) is a vibrant contemporary art museum on Wiradjuri Country in regional NSW. The Museum features six exhibition spaces and hosts over 25 original exhibitions annually from local, national, and international artists. MAMA’s permanent Visual Art Collection includes over 3000 works, complemented by a significant commissioning program. The Museum is committed to community engagement, offering various public programs, events, clubs, classes, workshops, kids programs, and partnership activities. It employs 16 permanent staff, supported by technicians, educators, casual team members, and volunteers.
The Position
The Curator, First Nations, will join the Curatorial team to deliver Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander programming. This role also involves assisting with the care, presentation, and development of the MAMA Visual Art Collection.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver exhibitions focusing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.
- Provide technical assistance for exhibition installation and de-installation.
- Contribute to writing and editing exhibition texts.
- Support research on programs involving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.
- Assist with the administration of the outward touring exhibition program.
- Aid in the care and development of the Visual Art Collection, focusing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artworks.
- Maintain relationships with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Groups and Agencies.
- Collaborate with team members to ensure efficient museum operations.
Employment Conditions
- Salary: $72,910 to $80,201 per annum + 11.5% superannuation, pro-rata.
- Part-time role: Minimum 21 hours per week, with potential to work up to 28 hours per week regularly.
- Additional hours up to 35 hours per week may be agreed upon and paid at the ordinary rate.
- A regular work pattern will be established at commencement.
Specialist Knowledge & Skills
- Solid knowledge of Aboriginal art and culture, including contemporary issues and debates on the public presentation of work by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.
- Skills and understanding of Visual Arts, art galleries’ educational public programs, and innovative program design.
- Research skills.
- Knowledge of WHS and risk management practices.
- Proficiency in exhibition installation, collection care, object handling, and condition reporting.
- Basic conservation work and cataloging of collection items.
- Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of cultural programs.
- Competence in making judgments regarding service delivery and asset security.
