Position Overview:
The Wolfsonian–FIU is seeking an experienced Curator to interpret and develop its extensive collection of modern art and design, spanning decorative arts, fine arts, propaganda, architectural materials, and industrial and graphic design from 1850 to 1950. This role offers the opportunity to shape exhibitions, reinstall permanent collection galleries, and contribute to research, publications, and public engagement.
Responsibilities:
- Collection Management: Research, catalog, interpret, publish, and care for The Wolfsonian’s 200,000-item collection.
- Exhibition Development: Lead or contribute to exhibitions, including object selection, interpretive planning, budgeting, and writing labels and catalogs.
- Gallery Reinstallation: Participate in rethinking and reinstalling the permanent collections galleries.
- Public Engagement: Provide tours, lectures, and academic papers; publish research; and represent The Wolfsonian’s collection at events.
- Acquisition Oversight: Support the Acquisition Committee with research and donor communications.
- Institutional Collaboration: Assist with public programming, strategic planning, policy development, and fundraising efforts.
- Advocacy: Act as a spokesperson for the collection on-campus and externally.
- Travel: Represent The Wolfsonian regionally, nationally, and internationally for research and exhibitions development.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Master’s or PhD in art history, design history, architectural history, history, or material culture studies.
- Curatorial experience with a track record of innovative exhibitions and publications.
Preferred:
- Reading proficiency in a foreign language related to The Wolfsonian’s collecting areas (e.g., German, French, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish).
