The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery | Len Lye Centre is a contemporary art gallery located in Ngāmotu New Plymouth, Aotearoa New Zealand. The Gallery has an international reputation and reach and was founded on the vision of Monica Brewster and her aspirations for a contemporary art museum for her city. The Gallery continues to build on its 50 year legacy of presenting meaningful national and international art that explores and celebrates who we are.
About Len Lye Centre
Added in 2015, the Len Lye Centre is the home of Len Lye’s collection and archive, and the centre for research, exhibitions and publications that convey the importance of his practice within the 20th century, today, and into the future.
The Opportunity
The Gallery currently has a unique and exciting opportunity for an experienced curator to join the team, with a focus on the work of Len Lye and forging new exhibitions, conversations and audiences for the artist’s work.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director, the curator will undertake new research, exhibition making and interpretation and work with key external partners and the Gallery team to successfully offer meaningful exhibition, publication and public program experiences. Supervising the Assistant Curator Len Lye and providing high level management of the Lye Collection and Archive, the curator will work collaboratively with a great Gallery team, the Len Lye Foundation and other external partners.
Qualifications
To be successful in this role, the candidate should have knowledge of modern and contemporary art, be aligned with the Govett-Brewster’s purpose and ambitions, and have a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and biculturalism. The Gallery can support your development of knowledge of cultural protocols as required. The candidate should have experience in curating exhibitions of modern and contemporary art and their integration in public programs and touring projects, commissioning of publications and relevant tertiary qualifications.
Skills
The curator should be an accomplished communicator with sound interpersonal skills and a warm professional approach, able to form partnerships and engage diverse local, national and international audiences. Most importantly, the candidate should be a positive manager and collaborative team member, well organized and will bring strong research, writing and public speaking capabilities to the role.
Remuneration
At Te Kaunihera-ā-rohe o Ngāmotu / New Plymouth District Council, we aim to create and sustain a truly rewarding workplace environment for our staff. The successful candidate can expect to start in this permanent full-time role with us between $77,099 and $87,378. We also offer an integrated Total Rewards Framework that spans Wellbeing, Development, Benefits, Culture and Recognition.
