Curator of Art at the Center for the Visual Arts

Pay: $18–$20 per hour, approximately $32,760–$36,400 annually

The Center for the Visual Arts is seeking a Curator of Art to lead exhibitions across its three gallery spaces: the Caroline S. Mark, Loft and Vault Galleries. Reporting to the Executive Director, the curator will shape the gallery programme, work with regional artists and develop accessible experiences for the Wausau community.

The role combines curatorial planning with the practical management of a nonprofit gallery. The curator will work with the Assistant Curator on installation and gallery preparation, collaborate with the Gallery Committee on exhibition schedules and proposals, and partner with the Education Team on activities connected to the exhibitions.

Responsibilities

The Curator of Art will select artists and develop exhibitions across the three galleries, bringing together a range of media and cultural perspectives. They will manage exhibition schedules and budgets, seek sponsors, prepare artist agreements and coordinate communication about sales, commissions and stipends.

The postholder will also oversee communications for exhibitions and gallery events, take part in community activities, and recruit, train and schedule gallery volunteers. They will provide regular updates on the programme and gallery performance to relevant committees.

Candidate profile

Applicants must have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in fine arts, art history, museum studies, arts administration or a related field. CVA seeks professional gallery experience, knowledge of visual art, craft and design, and an understanding of exhibition interpretation and curatorial practice.

Strong budgeting, scheduling, writing, public speaking and interpersonal skills are important, as is proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace. Experience in nonprofit management is an advantage.

The position includes a 90-day probationary period. Hybrid working may be available outside peak event seasons.
