Newfields seeks a visionary Curator of Asian Art to lead the interpretation, care, and growth of its outstanding Asian art collection, which spans East, South, and Southeast Asia. This is a pivotal opportunity to shape exhibitions, acquisitions, and gallery installations during a dynamic period of institutional renewal. The role requires scholarly depth, strategic thinking, and a commitment to inclusive, accessible curatorial practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead gallery reinstallations, especially the Chinese galleries
- Curate exhibitions with both scholarly and public engagement focus
- Grow and diversify the collection through acquisitions
- Conduct and publish original research
- Supervise a Curatorial Assistant
- Represent Newfields at scholarly and public forums
- Contribute to fundraising, donor engagement, and public programming
- Advance inclusive narratives in the interpretation of Asian art
Candidate Profile
- PhD in Art History, Asian Studies, or related field (required)
- Expertise in Japanese or Chinese art preferred
- Fluency in one or more relevant Asian languages (required)
- Minimum 5 years of curatorial experience
- Record of exhibitions, publications, and acquisitions
- Proven collaborative and project management skills
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and accessibility
