We – the city administration of Chemnitz – are looking for a part-time employee with 31 hours per week for the Chemnitz Art Collections at the earliest possible date.
About the position:
You will have overall responsibility for curating exhibitions and for the scientific supervision of the Textile and Applied Arts Collection of the Chemnitz Art Collections with the Henry van de Velde Museum, for the preservation, administration, documentation and scientific processing of all holdings in the Textile and Applied Arts Collection in the Art collections (European and non-European textiles; collection of artist posters from the 19th and 20th centuries; collection of European wallpapers; collection of Japanese coloring stencils) and supervision of the Henry van de Velde Museum in the Villa Esche (branch of the Chemnitz Art Collections) with the collection of Henry’s exhibits van de Velde (furniture, textiles, ceramics, porcelain, silver).
• You are responsible for the independent scientific-conceptual and organizational development and supervision of special and existing exhibitions, including loans and scientific publications.
• You will revise the permanent exhibition and further develop the program of the Henry van de Velde Museum.
• You are responsible for independent and autonomous scientific research (including provenance research and scientific processing of the “Degenerate Art” loss card index) and documentation of the entire holdings of the individual collections.
• You are in scientific exchange with specialist institutions in Germany and abroad and answer corresponding correspondence.
• You keep all relevant inventories using the BeeCollect software as well as the analogue and digital files as inventory manager, including the exhibition and literature file according to art historical criteria.
• You contribute your skills to the museum’s mediation and public relations work.
About the candidate:
• University degree with a major in art history, doctorate desired
• Well-founded specialist knowledge of art history, especially art from the 19th and 20th centuries. and 21st century and specialist knowledge in the applied and textile fields
• in-depth knowledge and practical experience in conveying art-historical facts and a very good sense of language
• sound knowledge and professional experience in museum collection management desirable
• sound specialist knowledge of exhibition design, catalog editing
• very good business fluent knowledge of the English (spoken and written) and in another foreign language (e.g. French, desirable)
• Very good PC user skills, experience with museum software such as MuseumPlus or BeeCollect desirable
• Above-average commitment and resilience, willingness to work when needed, even outside of regular working hours
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills
• High level of organizational talent, conceptual and planning skills and secure negotiating skills
